Painted/unpainted face cabs (not for sale) are provided nearby to show the end product...a direct casting. NOTE: This particular group transitioned from "rigid" polymer clay molds to "flexible" silicone molds in November, 2017. Special note: Slight distortions and/or uneven (or wonky) features are intended by the artist making the faces unique and with character. Each face is its own, some with deeper lines and more detail than others. The molds are recommended primarily for use with soft casting material that can be manipulated to suit your own style. All are handmade therefore slight imperfections and/or size, shape, color variations may exist while the resulting, overall impression remains the same. MOLD INSTRUCTIONS These molds can be used for casting chocolate, butter, pastries, isomalt, gumpaste, fondant, and other confectioneries. If used for baking, it is recommended the oven temperature not exceed 395 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are new to working with flexible silicone molds, the internet is full of "How To..." sites on preferred methods and/or the proper use of flexible silicone molds (which you may wish to review before purchasing). For recommended tutorial(s), refer to the FAQ/Q&A page (click on the “Ask a question” link to find the “Get Answers” or “Contact Seller” button). IMPORTANT: Even though these molds can also be used for non-edible items like polymer clay (Sculpey, Fimo, Premo, Cernit, Formello, Modello, Du-Kit, Kato Polyclay, etc.), PMC, low-melt metals (with a maximum recommended casting temperature of 350 degrees), plaster, urethane/epoxy/polyester resins, vinyl, wax, soap, cement and more, it is recommended that you use them for "edible" or "inedible" casting materials (i.e. one or the other, NOT both). The choice is yours... For edible castings, please be sure to wash the molds in hot soapy water before using. SILICONE MOLD MAINTENANCE TIPS (storage, cleaning, etc.) Storage: Silicone molds must be completely dry before storing and should be kept in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat or humidity (which can cause warping and a premature break down resulting in gradual tacky/sticky mold surfaces). If in storage for long periods of time, keeping a casted piece, wax or soap in the mold itself in addition to avoiding heavy stacking/crowding will allow molds to retain their shape for years. Furthermore, covered molds (using wax paper, plastic wrap or similar) placed in a zip lock bag will be kept free of dirt, dust, lint and other particles. TIP: To insert a casted piece back into a very intricate, detailed mold for storing, try letting hot water sit in the mold for several minutes before drying the mold (completely) and carefully replacing the piece. Pouring warm candle wax into the mold (which demolds easily, later) is also recommended. Cleaning (molds and hands) or removing residue: Silicone molds can be washed (periodically) with dish soap and a soft sponge in lukewarm water then dried (completely) before storing. (Using a dishwasher is NOT recommended nor are chemical solvents or copper/metal sponges that can scratch the mold...which is especially noticeable on a shiny surface.) Soaking silicone molds in detergent (Dawn is recommended) should help remove any built-up residue. Some even suggest a "bake-out" process (either 200 degrees "F" for 8 hours or 400 degrees "F" for 2 hours) to remove residue left behind from previous castings. NOTE: For cleaning hands after working/casting with uncured polymer clay, one alternative is to wipe/remove excess clay with alcohol then wash hands in lukewarm water using soap and also, a facial scrub of some kind (suitable to your skin). Facial scrubs (like St. Ives “Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub”) exfoliate and since they often contain micro bits of natural materials (fibers, grains, etc.), they deep clean your skin, removing clay from the crevices/lines in your hands and fingers (making your hands very soft and smooth). Removing Color (due to candle wax casting) from Molds: Clean the mold in lukewarm water using a soft sponge and dish soap then try pouring hot candle wax (with NO color) into the mold a few times (2-4) until the old wax color residue has faded or disappeared (having been picked up by the no color wax). Removing Scent from Molds: After cleaning the mold with soap and water, it is recommended you spray it with rubbing alcohol. Allow the alcohol to sit for 15-20 minutes before spraying, again, then rubbing off (immediately) with a clean paper towel. Wash the mold a second time with soap and water and repeat steps, if needed. Tear Repair & life extension: Cutting, tearing or piercing silicone molds is not advisable. Even a small tear will gradually become larger over time or with each use and can eventually warp if left unattended for a long period. In the event the mold is torn (depending on how much damaged their is), silicone can be used to repair it since silicone adheres to silicone. (One product recommendation that can also be used with food grade silicone molds is “Sil-Bond,” by Silco, Inc. Sil-Bond RTV 4500 is a high strength non-shrinking silicone sealant that is waterproof, flexible (when cured after 24 hours), and can endure a temperature range of -62 degrees F to 350 degrees F.) To extend the life of a silicone mold, an occasional wiping/rubbing of silicone oil into a used mold, can help to rejuvenate the mold. (Alumilite is just one of several companies that carries this product which can run up to $16.00 for a 1 lb. bottle.) Casting with Sticky Polymer Clay?: Repeated use, heavy kneading (with warm hands) and hot weather will often cause clays to become tacky or sticky (some more than others) but they are still usable. Refrigerating clay just before using is recommended (so long as it’s not in direct contact with food) and also, placing filled molds in the freezer for a few minutes (two to three) will make castings easier to remove. NOTE: Although silicone molds don’t always require a mold release, brushing a light coat of corn starch on both the inside of the silicone mold and the cone shaped ball of clay (before it is pressed, point first, into the mold prior to freezing) makes demolding a lot easier. Sometimes, even on warmer days, the corn starch release (on both the mold and the clay, where excess is “blown” off) is enough (without refrigeration) to do the trick.
