Manga meets Pop meets Zen in Over the Rainbow, the first combined presentation of Yoshitomo Nara and Hiroshi Sugito--close friends and stars of the Japanese contemporary art scene. Nara, born in 1959, is regarded as one of Japan's foremost contemporary artists, and has attained a cult status in his homeland that is hardly conceivable for European artists to reach. His signature paintings and drawings of children, often sporting grim gazes, that which recall the tradition of popular Japanese mangas, are among the most sought out items on the international art scene. His former student, Sugito, born in 1970, has also enjoyed great popularity in Japan. Sugito's delicate, finely-painted works are more subtle than Nara's and combine influences of Eastern and Western painting. The two artists completed the first of their joint works in 1997, and developed the idea for a joint exhibition and book project, Over the Rainbow, that same year.Eventually, in the summer of 2004, their goal was realized when Nara and Sugito were invited by the Austrian Galerie Belvedere to live and work in Vienna for three months. Over the Rainbow documents their visit: included are images of the artists at work, and the paintings and drawings that resulted from their collaboration. Since the mid-1990s, Japanese born artist Yoshitomo Nara has become known for this playful yet bold images, his mindfulness in determining how and where his art will be seen and for the close personal connection to his art’s creation. Nara selects colors that breathe life into his figures; his sculptures bear traces of his fingers, and the spontaneity of his drawings are born of a daily discipline of experimentation. Born in Aomori, Japan, in 1959, Yoshitomo Nara is part of a generation of young Japanese artists whose works are primarily based in Japanese pop culture - manga (comics) and television animation. He combines high and low art by painting cartoon-like children with a skilled brush and a complex palette. Nara's children, influenced by comic book characters, are at once innocent and demonic. The big, rounded heads contain glaring eyes, and their bodies often take on a defiant stance. Roberta Smith of The New York Times states, '(The paintings) undermine the tendency to idealize and infantilize children by suggesting that they are smarter, meaner and less unhappy than most grown-ups want to admit.' Nara imbues the children with many dimensions and even varied interests, implying that they have a whole world of their own. This complexity packs humor, pain and charm in almost every image. Yoshitomo Nara is represented by The Pace Gallery, New York, NY. The 60-year-old Yoshitomo Nara just had a huge jump for his work at auction. Last year, Sotheby’s Hong Kong set a new auction record for Nara's work, selling one of his paintings from 2000 for about $25 million. That piece, Knife Behind Back (2000), was first sold for just $20,000 in 2001. Nara's previous record was a paltry (comparatively speaking) $4 million, a figure reached in May 2000 at Christie’s in Hong Kong. A number of other works by the artist have traded at auction in recent years in the $3 million range, but the new $25 million result places him in a lofty field inhabited by very few living artists (or historical artists, for that matter). Hiroshi Sugimoto is a Japanese photographer and architect. He leads the Tokyo-based architectural firm New Material Research Laboratory.
