They are classified into hydroxyapatites (“Hap”), chlor-apatites (“Cl-ap”) and fluor-apatites (“Fap”) according to the prevalent anion.All of them have isolated PO4 tetrahedra and 9-coordination for calcium. Carbonate apatites replace a PO4 tetrahedron with a CO3OH or CO3F group. Calcium is often partially replaced by strontium, cerium, manganese and other cations.When this mineral is of gem quality, it can be used in jewelry (facets, cabochons).
