Description: Ross made two versions of these binoculars; what is rightfully called the Captain's glass was a handheld 10x70 version, and this larger 10x80 version was used as a gunfire director (the last picture shows these binoculars on gun director mount on a Royal Navy cruiser from the 1953 movie "Single-Handed"). These are a joy to use, but I have too many large binoculars and not enough space, sigh. These were made in 1942 but evidently were later coated (some models have a "B" on the prism cover, which indicates blooming, an earlier and inferior method to improve light transmission). These are great to use; view is bright, eyepieces turn freely, and filter knobs turn freely. Things to note: The hinge doesn't tighten fully (there is a knurled knob for that purpose), so I designed a plastic wedge as a stopgap to maintain the correct interpupillary distance until I got these in for a full refresh. Eyepieces are clean and coated with no damage, and focus freely. Prisms have no damage (no chips, no loss of silvering) but have a light amount of haze. Objective lenses have coating damage (on the INSIDE of the lenses; sailors cleaned the lenses with whatever dirty cloth they had, so during overhaul the lenses were reversed to put the good face out). The right lens is worse in this regard. Collimation is good. These originally had long sun shades (see last pic) for the objective lenses, which hinged to the side for cleaning. I designed and 3D printed hinged lens covers in the spirit of the originals. Weight 14.5 lbs.
