Description: Offered here is a World War 2 U.S. Marine Corps dog tag that belonged to Albert E Legere. He served initially as a ship detachment marine aboard the battleship USS Massachusetts from July 1942-April 1944. This included providing fire support or fleet escort for numerous battles including the Operation Torch landings in North Africa, the invasion of the Gilbert Islands, and the invasion of the Marshall Islands. He later fought on Iwo Jima as a member of the 8th Field Depot. This unit was one of the few marine units that fought off and defeated the final Japanese night attack on the airfield personnel there on the night of March 26, 1945. Some people contend that this may have been the battle where General Kuribayashi, the commander of Japanese forces on Iwo, met his demise, although this has never been confirmed or refuted.
