Description: The United States Marine Corps (USMC) adopted the Ka-Bar knife in November 1942. It was originally designated the 1219C2 combat knife, but was later called the USMC Mark 2 combat knife. Purpose The Ka-Bar was a multi-purpose tool that could be used as a weapon or a utility knife. It was used for driving nails, opening crates, and digging holes. Name The name "Ka-Bar" is widely believed to come from a testimonial letter that owner Wallace Brown received from a fur trapper. The letter was partially legible, but the phrase "ka bar" appeared, which is a fragment of the phrase "kill a bear". Manufacturer The Ka-Bar knife is manufactured by KA-BAR Knives, Inc., a subsidiary of the Cutco Corporation. The company was formerly known as Union Cutlery Co. and is based in Olean, New York. Other branches of the military The USMC Ka-Bar was also adopted by the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard. The US Navy called it the U.S. Navy utility knife, Mark 2. Metal conservation The Ka-Bar's lack of brass finger guards helped conserve metal resources during World War II.
