Description: This is an extremely rare, and perhaps one-of-a-kind image World War One U.S. Navy image. This is a photo brought back from WWI by a US Navy sailor named Joseph Mondzelski of Parson, PA who appears to have served aboard destroyer tender USS Black Hawk and/or USS Lake, largely in Scotland (Kirkwall/Orkney islands). He also took photos of USS Lakeview, a transport ship that operated near Scotland too, and appears to have been familiar with that crew. Type & Size: A 4x2.5 original photograph. Condition: The back side of most photos in this lot have remnants from being glued in a scrapbook. Please see photos for condition. The photograph depicts a naval vessel, likely a destroyer tender, operating in the waters of Scotland in 1918. It focuses on the ship's side profile, showcasing the main deck and a distinctive smokestack or mast. Given the context, it may be related to the USS Black Hawk or USS Lake, which were active during World War I. The image captures a moment in naval history, reflecting the maritime operations of the US Navy during the final year of the war. In 1918, the US Navy played a crucial role in supporting Allied forces across Europe, particularly in the maritime domain. Ships like the USS Black Hawk and USS Lake were essential for maintaining supply lines and troop transport for naval operations. The presence of American forces in locations such as Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, signifies the strategic importance of Scotland during this period. The photograph not only serves as a visual record of these vessels but also highlights the contributions of naval personnel like Joseph Mondzelski.
