The squadron's primary role was to protect German colonial interests, secure trade routes, and project naval power in East Asia. In 1914, the German East Asia Squadron was a cruiser squadron of the Imperial German Navy that was involved in several military actions during World War I, including: Battle of Penang. On October 28, 1914, the squadron's cruiser SMS Emden sank two Allied warships in the Penang Strait.Battle of Coronel. On November 1, 1914, the squadron, led by Vice-Admiral Graf Maximilian von Spee, defeated the Royal Navy's squadron commanded by Rear-Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock. The victory was easy for Spee, but he lost almost half of his ammunition supply. Battle of the Falkland Islands. On December 8, 1914, the squadron was destroyed by a superior British force at the Battle of the Falkland Islands.
