Description: Original WW1 (1916) BATTLE of the SOMME Infantry TRENCH MAP entitled "COMBLES".Edition 2D - (Scale 1:10,000) with trench corrections to 24th July 1916.This was just three weeks into the Battle of The Somme, and it's interesting to note the appearance in this edition of a lot of additional information regarding the measurements of ditches and heights of embankments etc. At the time, the first ever tanks were secretly being readied for action in the coming weeks, and this information would have been crucial for tank crews hoping to avoid 'ditching' or 'beaching' on such obstacles.Features locations such as COMBLES, MORVAL, LESBOEUFS, SAILLISEL, ST PIERRE VAAST WOOD, VAUX WOOD etcIn pristine condition.This map was originally produced on unbacked paper for official retention and eventually passed its way to the NATIONAL WAR MUSEUM LIBRARY where it was ink stamped front and back. Later, conservation staff at the IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM gave it a linen backing (covering the rear stamp) and added their own raised museum stamp and archive serial number. The rear stamp can be seen when held up to the light (see photos). This map is one of many acquired from a private collection which was previously purchased in 2002 from The Imperial War Museum. Each item was held in the museum's duplicate archives and deemed surplus. Almost all have IWM stock numbers or stamps etc and many have been linen backed for long term conservation and storage purposes. Significant numbers were unused surplus stock when originally transferred to the museum and have never even been folded. As such, many of these original WW1 maps are in 'time capsule' condition, and there are numerous 'Secret' or 'Confidential' maps relating to major battles amongst them.
