In November 1941 he as a radio operator on a PBY-5 with VP-22. After Pearl Harbor he was assigned to VP-24. He saw active duty with that unit for a while. The radioman is then transferred to VPB-71 -flying PBY 5C aircraft. VPB 71 was a Blac Cat Squadron and were involved in some combat attacks around May 1944. . The unit was also based with several deferent with Seaplane Tender ships. I skimmed the book some more and discovered this Black Cat squadron saw action in the Philippines to the end of the war.
