Description: The history of "Sweetheart' or "Mother" pillows dates back to the time of the Spanish-American War. Originally made from old feed sacks, by the time WW I and WW II came along the pillow covers were being made of silk, rayon, and acetate. Inexpensive and readily available on base, soldiers would send these pillow covers back home to their mother or sweetheart as a small souvenir. These pillows fell out of popularity around the time of the Viet Nam War. Depending on their personal preference, the lucky recipient would either frame the pillow cover and hang it on a wall or fill them with stuffing and use them as throw pillows in the home. The group we have up for sale was brought in by a local family who discovered them in a drawer while cleaning out their late mother's home. We believe these date to WW II but ask that you rely on your personal knowledge and experience to make that determination. The pillow being offered here appears to have never been used. It measures approximately 18 inches by 18 inches. The colors and graphics remain bright and clear. We examined the pillows carefully and did not see any rips, tears, or other damage that would negatively impact the display ability of the pillow. Under a bright light you may notice a faint bit of age related fading or discoloration as well as a tassel or two missing but nothing that distracts from the overall appearance. To honor the auction process I will not end an auction early, I think this is the only way to make things fair for all bidders. For a variety of reasons, I also do not offer local pick up. Thank you for stopping by. If you have a spare minute or two please consider taking a look at the other items I have up for sale. Internal: hf0928
