Early in the war he was involved in anti-submarine missions with the 20th Bomb Group. This is covered in the book. In the summer of 1943 he is sent to the 8th Air Force. The officer is a B-17 Pilot in the 8th Air Force, 384th Bomb Group. He flew missions from 1943 to 1944. The following I pulled from the internet about the General; assigned to the 2nd Bomb Group. At the outset of the war, Smith was commanding one of the squadrons of the 2nd Bomb Group, the 20th, and was placed under Navy control with his squadron to hunt submarines. He continued on this type of work under the Navy until the summer of 1943, holding successively positions as group executive officer, group commander, and assistant chief of staff of the Army Air Forces Anti-Submarine Command.From 1943 until late 1944 Smith commanded a B-17 group in England, the 384th. He was credited with 31 combat missions and was awarded the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross with three clusters, and the Croix de Guerre with palm. His group was cited twice as a Distinguished Unit.
