Description: When guitarists who know their gear talk shop about muff-style fuzz pedals, it's usually a relatively straightforward conversation. Aside from the countless variants, most of the discussion is about transistors and who used which variant. There was a strange time in the history of muff pedals when the design of the circuit changed drastically. That was in 1978 when the transistors inside were discarded in favor of operational amplifiers, also known as op-amps. This particular variant was only made for about two years, so only a few thousand ever made it out of New York City. In 2014, the 'muff masters' at Wren and Cuff created the definitive version of the non-solid state fuzz box with the Eye See '78 (formerly known as the Eye See Pi). Aside from the missing transistors, the Wren and Cuff Eye See '78 features a completely different clipping section for a monstrously 'wooly' sound popularized by Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan on Siamese Dream. As expected, the Eye See '78's sound differs from a classic muff circuit: While most vintage muffs sound a bit 'sweet', the Eye See '78 is significantly crunchier and 'fatter' than a standard muff. In 1978, the circuitry was also expanded to include a tone bypass switch on the back of the pedal, which of course was also adopted for the Eye See '78. The switch takes the passive tone stack out of the signal path and creates a rougher, more open sound with a volume boost. Of course, this switch renders the tone knob useless, but you certainly won't miss the knob in this mode! If you're looking for an untamed, IC-based fuzz and distortion pedal that can be adapted to any genre imaginable, look no further than the Wren and Cuff Eye See '78! item details - Fuzz effect pedal - detailed replica of the IC-based muff from 1978 - Crunchier and 'fatter' than a standard muff - can be adapted to most genres - Tone bypass switch takes the passive tone stack out of the signal path for a volume boost and a significantly rougher and more open sound - True hard wire bypass - Volume, Tone, Distortion controls - Tone bypass toggle switch - Bypass footswitch - Status LED - metal body - 6.3 mm mono jack input / output - Power supply via 9V battery or optional 9V DC power supply, 2.1 x 5.5 mm barrel connector, polarity (-) inside (battery is not included) - Current consumption 6.5 mA - Dimensions (L x W x H) 121 x 65 x 40 mm - Weight 284g - Made in the USASeen cheaper elsewhere?
