World Record Megalodon Shark Tooth Over 7 Inches (replica) #3050

Description: World Record Megalodon Shark Tooth Over 7 Inches (replica) #3050 Solid Resin last 2 photos show original tooth Megalodon, scientifically known as Otodus megalodon is the largest shark that ever lived. Just imagine the size and power of the animal that had teeth like this. Very large Megalodons had teeth over 7 inches and up to about 300 of them in jaws up to 7 feet across. The largest Megalodons are believed to have been over 60 feet long and weighing over 60 tons. They are an extinct species of mackerel shark that lived approximately 23 to 3.6 million years ago, from the Early Miocene to the Pliocene epochs. Their teeth have been found worldwide. This may in fact be the largest verifiably measured Megalodon tooth known. This monster tooth was found in Ocucaje, Peru It measures 182mm or 7.113 inches on the longest slant angle. It resides in a private collection in Peru. It was photographed, measured and cast by Craig Sundell, a researcher from the University of Kansas in the 1990s. The tooth is not a composite and has not been restored. There is a repaired crack because the tooth was found broken but it was a clean break. The replica tooth offered for sale here is a direct cast from that tooth. Fossil Megalodon teeth are relatively common in some areas of the world, such as the coastal regions of the SE United State. Most adult Megalodon teeth fall into the 4-5? size range. As teeth approach 6 inches they become rare, representing far less than 1% of teeth. These 6-inch teeth obviously represented extremely large individual sharks. Very few Megalodon teeth have ever been found exceeding 7 inches. Many people who have spent their lifetime?s finding and collecting Megalodon teeth have never had their hands on a 7+ inch tooth. Determining what is truly the largest Megalodon tooth found is problematic, because just like with fishing, people like to exaggerate. There?re a million stories about that 7 ½? or 8? tooth that someone found, but for some reason disappeared, never to be seen again. Large Megalodon teeth can be very valuable, so there is a huge incentive to ?enhance? a tooth, often artificially lengthening it. One of the last high quality non-restored Megalodon teeth over 7 inches sold for around $50,000. You never know the true size of these restored/enhanced teeth. These large teeth are so valuable this also causes collectors to be being very hesitant to disclose large teeth in their collection, out of fear of inviting thieves. Separating out some of the obvious fish tails, one of the best candidates for the largest Megalodon had been a massive tooth found by the late Vito Bertucci in South Carolina and now in the collection of Dr. Gordon Hubbell. This tooth purportedly measures between 7 1/4? and 7 3/8?, although no exact caliper readings are available. Another tooth that was often cited as the record holder, was a large specimen collected by Pete Larson of the Black Hills Institute from Peru. This tooth measured in at around 7 1/4? but had been found broken and was repair and gaps restored. The resulting root was appeared highly elongated compared to other Megalodon teeth, leading many to question whether this restoration work caused the tooth to be artificially lengthened. Rumors to slightly larger teeth in the collections of locals in Peru persist, including one reportedly 192mm or 7.55 inches. This region of Peru has produced the largest known Megalodon teeth. One reason being is that it likely represented a deeper water environment with larger food sources where the super-sized Megalodons would be hanging out. It?s illegal for fossils found in Peru to leave the country, so don?t expect to see the gigantic teeth from this location up for sale. This description was modified from the website https://www.megalodonswag.com/what-is-the-largest-megalodon-tooth-ever-found/ THE IMPORTANCE OF FOSSIL REPLICAS By definition authentic fossils are unique one-of-a-kind occurrences. No two fossils are identical. In fact, many fossils are the one and only known specimen of a particular genus or species. With only one specimen available for study how do paleontologist around the world study such rare and often very fragile specimens? One answer to that question is through replicas cast directly from the original fossil. This way many exact copies can be made and distributed for research and museum display all over the world. Thus, fossils replicas are an important scientific tool. In some cases, a replica of a fossil lost or destroyed may be the only remaining evidence of the original fossil. Replicas allow direct study of otherwise unattainable specimens. Replicas allow the public to see, enjoy and learn about specimens that otherwise might be locked away in some storage cabinet or vault. For example, there is only one original Archaeopteryx specimen known as the Berlin specimen and that original is kept in a vault in Germany. However, nearly every museum in the world displays a replica of this important fossil. Another example is the Tyrannosaurus rex known as Sue? the most complete specimen ever found. There is only one original, but replicas are in museums all over the world. The importance of replicas in paleontology and education cannot be overstated.
