Wilhelm Viëtor was one of the most famous actors of the neo-liberal reform movement towards the end of the 19th century. He criticized the desolate state of foreign language teaching , especially the predominant practice-oriented grammar translation method in the newer languages at German schools. He demanded that the main focus be on what he considered to be the ultimate goal - the highest possible level of oral language competence. Life As the son of a Protestant pastor, Wilhelm Viëtor was born in 1850 in Nassau in Rhineland-Franconia. After attending grammar schools in Wiesbaden and Weilburg , he devoted himself to the study of theology at the request of his father, but also philology in Berlin and Marburg. After a short teaching at several schools in England, he returned to Germany for the purpose of promotion. This was followed by further short positions as teachers at schools in Wiesbaden, Essen and Düsseldorf before accepting a position as German Lecturer at University College Liverpool for several years. In 1884 he followed a call, first to the extraordinary, then, ten years later, to the full professor of English philology at the University of Marburg . After his 34 years teaching there, a prolonged illness and grief over the loss of his youngest son in the First World War led to his death on 22 September 1918. Work One of his first major steps in the field of linguistics was Wilhelm Viëtor 1875 with the publication of the dialect of his home region. With his four years later published English school grammar he broke for the first time with the previous traditions, which included on the one hand a separate chapter on phonetics and on the other hand, the inflection of phonetic transcription was accompanied. Initially, if he turned to his own system of phonetics , he used from the fourth edition of 1906, the international phonetic alphabet published by the Association Phonétique Internationale . His best known writing, the pamphlet The language lessons have to reverse , which he initially published, due to its relative unfamiliarity, under the pseudonym Quousque Tandem , kicked off a wave of protests with his pungent criticism and his radical demands, but reaped at least as many reformists Applause and started a fruitful debate. His reform proposals were grouped around the main objective of gaining linguistic competence. They extended from the reduction of fabric filling, the integration of phonetics in the classroom, the reduction of the grammar to the essentials up to the demand to hold the foreign language teaching monolingual, namely in the target language. However, the author's unfamiliarity quickly changed with other publications. With participation Viëtors founded in 1886, the German Neuphilologen Association. A year later, he published the journal Phonetische Studien , which was replaced in 1893 by the now better known The New Languages , which became a mouthpiece of the reformers. Through his teaching as a professor of English philology at the University of Marburg, he was able to influence the education of teachers and to pass on his basic foreign didactic basic beliefs to his students. In addition to other editions of his textbooks Viëtor also brought out editions of literary texts as reading for English lessons, published reviews and essays on foreign language didactic or linguistic subjects. He has also made great contributions to the design of the Marburger Ferienkurse, founded in 1896 by the Romanist Eduard Koschwitz .
