A split in the Gay Sunshine collective in 1971 led to two issues of a spin-off publication called People's Gay Sunshine and a less collectively run approach to future issues of Gay Sunshine, which came under the editorship of original collective member Winston Leyland. Leyland, an immigrant from England, later founded two successful publishing imprints, Gay Sunshie Press and Leyland Press, which published gay erotica, anthologies, translations of non-English gay classics, etc. Under Leyland's direction, the newspaper went in a more literary, albeit still radically political, direction.
