THE BATTLE OF WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA ~ recovered near the New Quarter area in October 2000 ~ A relic condition Civil War Era Relic brass Carpet Bag lock, measuring 1 1/2" diameter. This relic condition Civil War Era Relic brass Carpet Bag lock, measuring 1 1/2" diameter, was found at the site of the Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia in the New Quarter Area in October 2000. This area saw action between Hancock’s Union brigade and D.H. Hill’s Confederate brigade during the May 5, 1862 Battle of Williamsburg. Fought on May 5, 1862 during General George McClellan's Peninsula Campaign, the battle saw 41,000 Union soldiers face off against 32,000 Confederates. Although the Union attack had some success against Johnson's Army, which was retreating towards the defenses around Richmond, the victory was not followed up on. Almost 4,000 soldiers became casualties during the battle. A provenance letter will be included. We include as much documentation with the relics as we possess. This includes copies of tags if there are original identification tags or maps, as well as a signed letter of provenance with the specific recovery information. All of the collections that we are offering for sale are guaranteed to be authentic, and are either older recoveries, found before the 1960s when it was still legal to metal detect battlefields, or were recovered on private property with permission. Land on Battlefields that is now Federally owned, or owned by the Trust, was acquired after the relics were recovered. We will not buy or sell any items that were recovered illegally, nor will we sell any items that we suspect were recovered illegally. Thank you for viewing!
