In the eighteenth century,fifers and drummers regulated the routine ofcamp life, wakening the troops with the morningreveille and beating a tattoo at day’s end. Theyalso provided a musical accompaniment for thedaily ceremonies attended by every soldier.Occasionally the fifes and drums played atevening entertainments designed to bolster thetroops’ esprit de corps or at dances given by theofficers.When bodies of troops marched from one pointto another, the strict tempo of the drums’ steadybeat established the pace. On the field of battlethe fifes and drums signaled the movements andactions ordered by their officers.The selections on this recording have beenchosen to illustrate the various kinds of tunesplayed by fifers and drummers in colonialAmerica. All of the pieces are either traditionalmelodies or have been taken from eighteenth- orearly nineteenth-century music publications andmanuscripts.Each side opens with a Fanfare, an intro-duction played at ceremonial occasions. Troopingaccompanied the daily trooping of the regimentalcolors. “Three Taps, Three Cheers’’ is followedby the singlings and doublings, drum signals thatmoved the fifers, drummers, and officers intoother positions, and by slow and quick marches.“Hey! Johnny Cope” is a traditional Scottish tunestill used by Highland regiments for reveille.The tempo of the Long Marches, “Duke ofPerth’s Reel” and “Drummond Castle,” is 96paces to the minute. The open beatings give thefifers an opportunity to catch their breath.Typical of the incidental music of the period,the Medleys feature changes of tempo. Several ofthe pieces are adaptations of dance tunes.TheRemeu; includes the different tempi playedat a military review. A grand march is followed bya common step and a slow march, concluding withmarches in 6/8 and 9/8 time.The use of penny whistles during the “AshGrove Dance sequence is the only departurefrom the basic fife and drum scores. Some of thedance melodies are played in free time, makingthe florid embellishments and style of the instru-ments very effective. An old folk instrument, thepenny or tin whistles are accompanied by tabors,small drums that have heads of calf- or goat-skins.They are played with sticks and fingers.All of the arrangements are by John C. Moon,Herbert E. Watson, and William E. White.The Senior Corps of the Fifes and Drums ofColonial Williamsburg has been in existencesince 1958. It is composed of twenty-four playingmembers between the ages of twelve and seven-teen.
