The following inscription appears in a scroll on the base above William Adams' signature: "This pattern was introduced by William Adams in 1780 being a copy of a Chinese pattern & one of the first of its style produced in English pottery."This plate measure 6" and 5.75" inches (one is slightly smaller)Very Good Condition but with some crazing on the bottomAbout the Pattern: Chinese Bird (assigned) aka Bird and Basket c. 1779-1809 was introduced by William Adams in 1780 at his Greengates factory, joining the competition for the chinoiserie market on pearlware. A copy of a Chinese pattern and one of the first of its style produced in English Pottery Wm Adams.The pattern was revived around 1910 at which time the backstamp included the phrase ‘Registration Applied For.’ Once registered in 1913 the backstamp then carried the registration number #623294. Selling well it remained in production until 1940. The Chinoiserie pattern had a pheasant perched on a basket as a centre cartouche and the pieces were printed in dark blue similar to the original ware but used only the ‘cracked ice’ background never the original basket weave.Revived for a third time pattern (#7881) by Adams under Wedgwood it featured a dark blue printed white ironstone (Micratex) as a slide transfer print which was in production for five years again only using the ‘cracked ice’ background. The pattern is named 'Chinese Bird'. It was first introduced in 1780 as one of the first Chinese style patterns produced in English pottery. The pattern was copied and introduced again around 1913. This pattern was popular through 1920s and 1930s. It consists of panels featuring Asiatic birds and oriental scenes. Panels are surrounded by blue and white mosaic.William Adams & Sons Ltd history dates back to 1769 but Adams family potteries had been running even in 1650. The firm produced earthenware, basalt, jasper and ironstone ware. Blue printed Adams backstamp with reg. no. 623294 china was made by William Adams and Sons of Staffordshire, England. The firm became part of the Wedgwood Group in 1966.
