Born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands, DUTCH artist, WILLEM DE KOONING, emigrated to the United States as a young man by stowing away in a ship. Landing in New York, he managed to get work as a commercial artist, working on Manhattan billboards and other advertising projects. Starting in the 1930s, de Kooning switched from commercial to fine art, numbering amongst his contemporaries, the New York ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST painters FRANZ KLINE and drip-painting pioneer, JACKSON POLLOCK, whom he particularly admired and became close friends with. Many decades later, in 1962 de Kooning became a naturalized American citizen. Willem de Kooning is one of the most prominent and celebrated of the ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST painters; his pictures typify the vigorous, gestural style of the movement. Perhaps more than any of his contemporaries, he developed a radically abstract style of painting that fused CUBISM, SURREALISM and EXPRESSIONISM. While many of his colleagues moved from figuration to abstraction, de Kooning always painted figures, most notably WOMEN and ABSTRACTIONS concurrently, making no distinction between the art historical categories. De Kooning's real subject, he insisted, was space and the figure-ground relation. His "WOMAN" series was controversial, often seen as horrific or misogynistic. He later said: "I made them satiric and monstrous, like Sibyls." Floating, backgroundless, in their own limbo-like space, the "WOMAN" paintings (made over a 30+ year period) remain his most well-known and famous works. Although known for continually reworking his canvases, de Kooning often left them with a sense of dynamic incompletion, as if the forms were still in the process of moving and settling and coming into definition. De Kooning's engagement with popular culture was also unique and informed a host of post-war artists from the NEO-DADAISM of ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG to the POP-ART of JAMES ROSENQUIST, and also younger painters such as CECILY BROWN, have all explored the gestural eroticism of his later paintings. Willem de Kooning died in 1997 at his longtime home and studio in East Hampton, Long Island, New York. THE PAINTING This ORIGINAL superb "WOMAN" work is a MIXED-MEDIA PAINTING-DRAWING hybrid on PAPER. It is made with COLORED CHALKS / PASTELS, CHARCOAL, GRAPHITE, GOUACHE and WATERCOLOR PAINTS. Mounted in a linen-fabric matte inside a green and gold wood frame, the actual size of the paper sheet measures: 10" x 8" (25.5 cm x 20.3 cm). The old wood frame measures: 23" x 19" (58.5 cm x 48.25 cm). This ORIGINAL WORK is SIGNED, in the lower-right corner: de Kooning. NOT DATED, circa late-1940s.
