The multi-talented artist, writer, editor, “packager,” and businessman began his long career as a teenager shortly after the birth of comic books in the mid 1930s. He is is best known as the creator of The Spirit (1940-52) and the modern graphic novel (starting with A Contract with God in 1978), but he also invented Sheena, Queen of the Jungle; Blackhawk; Dollman; and other Golden Age characters. Eisner also pioneered the field of educational comics, both for the U.S. Army (Army Motors and PS), other government agencies, and private industry. The annual Will Eisner Awards for excellence in comics, presented annually at San Diego Comic Con, are named after him. His original art is highly prized, sometimes selling for tens of thousands of dollars at Heritage and other auctions.
