Description: WILD FLOWERS OF THE WORLD Text by Brian D. Morley Paintings by Barbara Everard ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Hardcover with unclipped dust jacket; 432 pages; Size Approx. 9 1/2 X 12 1/4. Published by G. P. Putnam's Sons; copyright 1970, First American Edition. Details: "More than l,000 plants depicted on 192 color plates. The lore of flower life stretches back into antiquity, blending into the legend, religion, and magic of the world's ancient peoples. Man was first intrigued by the splendors and curiosities of wild plants, prompting him to breed the familiar garden varieties we know today. From the hundreds of thousands of wild flowers Brian D. Morley has chosen a selection from around the world to illustrate why man was attracted to flowers and to demonstrate how intriguing these natural wonders can be. Utilizing the paintings of a superb botanic artist and skillfully combining precise scientific description with information of a historical, anecdotal, and practical nature, he presents the plants chosen for his survey in a way that satisfies the curiosity of the botanist, the gardener, and everyone who is moved by the beauties of nature. The author has grouped his plants into twelve geographic regions, ranging from the Arctic to tropical Africa, from North America to the Himalayas and Australia. In each area he has made a considered choice of plants to discuss: a common but characteristic flower, or a rare one, or one that is exotic. His selection includes one or two new species, others which had not previously been described for science, and yet additional ones that had not been published recently, if ever, in color reproduction. The most interesting plants in each region are presented in full color, generally slightly less than life size. Parts and fascinating details are shown enlarged. In some cases the plant depicted is given a whole page, while in others several smaller ones are grouped. In all, more than l,000 plants are illustrated in paintings of outstanding quality. Along with the text they make Wild Flowers of the World a beautiful as well as authoritative volume." (from the dust jacket flap) The book has a red cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine; beautifully illustrated with paintings by Barbara Everard; index of botanic names as well as common names. A fine addition for your bookshelf! Condition: This is an ex-library book with all of the usual markings and attachments. The dust jacket is in a clear mylar protective sleeve and is taped to the book. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.Delivery:We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
