This is Keramos model 1110. It is called 'Junger Spatz, stehend' and features sparrow standing on pedestal representing ground with support like tree branch between her legs. She is painted in her natural colors – brown body and red head with black details and beak. Pedestal and tree branch are in off white with green outline at the edges. There is a green leaf shown between her legs. Gentle texture of ceramics beautifully resembles details of bird feathers. Looks splendid. It is made in stoneware with polychrome decoration. Famous sculptor Eduard Klablena (1881 - 1933) designed this figurine. Burn in Slovakia, he studied in Vienna School of Applied Arts. He worked in Austria and Germany. He was a member of the German Werkbundes. In 1910 – 1911 he created models for the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin (KPM). In 1911 he returned to Austria forever and founded a workshop in Langenzersdorf. From 1911 he regularly participated in exhibitions at the Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, where he showed ceramic figures, people and animals. In the years 1912-1919, he supplied a total of 842 figurines for Wiener Kunst Keramik. The backside of this item carries ‘Wien Keramos’ logo in black with ‘Made in Austria’. According to my books this is production of c. 1930s. It is known about ‘Wien Keramos’ that they often marked their figurines with original artist signs. We do not see it on this piece. Other marking is model number 1110 incised on the backside. Figurine measures about 3” x 2” and stands 3 1/2” tall. Condition is good with chips found. Colors are bright and vibrant. There is a tiny hairline under green leaf. It is hard to notice. Integrity of this piece is not changed. Bird displays very well. However, it is reasonable to notice that it has one line green mark on the backside. It might indicate this issue with hairline.
