Description: Whimsical c. 1765 Irish Sterling Silver Hand Chased Rose Water Bowl Presented is a sterling silver bowl from Dublin in the late 1700s. This piece has a whimsical hand-chased pattern with lots of beading and scroll-work. There design is symmetrical all the way around the bowl creating a mandala-like effect. The bowl is shallow and could have been used for rose water or as a church bowl originally. The piece is marked with the Irish harp crowned for sterling as well as the Hibernia mark for Dublin. There is a maker's mark that is quite worn. We interpreted it as a CD. This mark could indicate Charles Dowdall, a maker in Dublin during this time. However, this could also be the mark of a provincial maker who didn't have their marks recorded between 1750-1786. The bowl is in good condition. There was probably a monogram removal at the center because the metal is very thin there and now has a few dents. Some of the beading is worn and now have holes. This bowl will no longer be able to hold any liquid. The chasing is otherwise well defined. There are no repairs.
