The musical was inspired by the Black Civil Rights anthem 'Young, Gifted and Black,' which Weldon wrote with Nina Shimone. The recording session brought together a group of talented musicians, including Marcus Miller, whose name had not yet reached international prominence, to breathe new life into Weldon's distinctive inserts.
