WASHINGTON AND HIS GENERALS, Thompson & Thomas ed., circa 1900, 2-Vol Set, VG

Description: Washington and His Generals by J. T. Headley, circa 1900 (no dates), maroon cloth covers, gilt on spines, Thompson & Thomas Chicago, Very Good Condition. The two-book set is published in 8 pt type, very small lettering. The publication's list images of Washington on the facing page to page one, yet there are no images of Washington in either copy. This is most likely because the images were copyrighted. I believe this book was not copyrighted as in searching for it I could only find a copy of Vol II anywhere. In researching the Publisher, Thompson & Thomas published books in Chicago between 1900 and 1908, the name was changed to Charles C. Thompson and Co. in 1909. I could find no copies of the two-volume set anywhere, making these very rare and despite the minor water damage, I rated the Set Very Good Condition and priced it accordingly. There is a ladies presentation card inside the cover of Volume I (see, image of the inside cover), "Mrs Eleanor Francis Burkham", whom I found in a search as being married to a lawyer in San Bernardino Calf. and who died in 1926. On the reverse of that card, an image of which is above, she signed it "Nell", which her obituary says was her nick name. She gave the book to her husband's mother sometime between 1909 and 1926. So the book was published, without copyright, without pictures of George Washington and sometime between 1900 and 1908. The books were originally published in one volume by Baker & scribner, NY, in 1847. Very Good Condition. Hardcover, maroon cloth over boards, gold gilt lettering on spine, corners are VG, no signs of shelf wear or bumping, 2 vol set, Circa 1900-1908, no date, VG+. Bond paper, water stains on both books but minor, no spots, tears or markings, VG. Author: J. T. Headley. Publisher: Thompson & Thomas Chicago. No dust jackets, illustrated. Note, both books indicate images of George Washington on facing page to page 1 - there are no photos of him (see image, Illustrations). Spines and bindings are VG+. Dimensions: 5 in x 7 in x 1 in.
