Description: 2 Gorgeous Volumes:1)Leaves of Grass, 1876, (Author’s Edition, signed by Whitman)2)Two Rivulets, 1876, (Presentation Copy, signed twice by Whitman, inscribed & signed) Included, is an era postcard from September 20th, 1877, written to Walt Whitman, requesting two volumes. Postcard is from and signed by Edward Carpenter, on behalf of his friend, H.R. Haweis. Carpenter(an important writer himself) was an overseas friend of Whitman’s who was inspired to write his own poems and essays about democracy and socialism. There is a strong connection between Carpenter and Whitman, and it makes sense that he would write to Whitman to request a book on his friend’s behalf, as stated in the postcard. F. E. Pearsall, and inscribed on the front free endpaper, 4 section titles.Bound in half cream Morocco over marbled boards and brown/burgundy original leather label lettered in gilt, and yellow endpapers. Original three-quarter cream calf over green marbled boards retained everywhere but spine. The spine was professionally & sympathetically rebacked, retaining original endpapers(same as the second volume offered, Leaves of Grass(1876), so that they matched the original calf and themselves well). Please see pictures. Presentation copy, signed twice…In addition to the signed frontispiece photograph, Whitman inscribed "H.R. Haweis from the author" on the flyleaf before mailing it to Haweis. Along with the Author's Edition of Leaves of Grass, Whitman had between 600 and 650 copies of this work, Two Rivulets, printed for the American Centennial. He signed the photographic frontispiece as he sold them from his home in Camden. The postcard was sent by H.R. Haweis from London on September 20th, 1877, requesting Whitman to "Please also send two vols: Leaves [...] and Two Rivulets)." It looks from the postage stamp to have arrived to Whitman on October 3rd, 1876. The postcard was sent by Edward Carpenter, from London, requesting Whitman to "Please also send two vols: (Leaves [...] and Two Rivulets)" for H.R. Haweis. The present copy of Two Rivulets (1876) was later owned by the artist, poet and writer José García Villa, who was born in Manila in 1908, before moving to New Mexico to pursue his studies, and ultimately to Greenwich Village in New York City. There, he joined a community of modernist poets, including e.e. cummings, Marianne Moore and W.H. Auden, among others, and was affectionately known as "The Pope of Greenwich Village." He wrote his poems under the pseudonym Doveglion (a composite of dove, eagle and lion) and was admired, according to Marianne Moore, for "the reverence, the raptness, the depth of concentration in [his] bravely deep poems." His 1933 story collection, Footnote to Youth: Tales of the Philippines and Others, was "the first work of fiction by a Filipino writer published by a major United States-based press." Haweis (presentation inscription) — José García Villa, thence by descent Details of Leaves of Grass (1876), Author’s Edition Author’s edition of Leaves of Grass (Camden, New Jersey, 1876) signed on the title page by, “Walt Whitman.” Sixth edition, one of 600 copies, original three-quarter cream calf over green marbled boards, original leather spine label, 384 pages, two portraits of Whitman, measures 8 by 5 inches, in great condition with the spine professionally & sympathetically rebacked, retaining original endpapers. Front endpaper stamped with “Bretanos’ Emporium”. Two pencil markings at very beginning, before text. Although the 1876 Author’s Edition of Leaves of Grass completes the 2 volume set from 1876(Leaves of Grass & Two Rivulets), this specific copy of Leaves of Grass (1876) is not the same exact copy that Carpenter requested in his note to Whitman, for H.R. Haweis. It was pieced together from a different source. The copy of Two Rivulets for sale is the one requested by H.R. Haweis though. Please ask me any questions for any points of clarification. This is a unique chance to have both volumes of Whitman’s incredible 1876 set, in great condition, to read them both without worry since both bindings are sound because of the professional work done to these beautiful masterpieces of Walt Whitman.
