The Collection: This comic is from a collection of many hundreds that belonged to a friend of our family who passed away on October 19, 2021. He bought them off the rack as a child in the 1940s and 50s. They stayed carefully tucked away in the same home since that time. The first time they were handled or moved is when they were put into a tub when his house was cleaned out after his death. This was not done by us but was mostly done carefully and only a few appeared to be damaged in the process. The original owner had no spouse or children and no other living family, so many of his things came to us. Included in this collection are many Dell Four Color and Disney titles, including a nearly complete run of Uncle Scrooge and a very long run of Walt Disney?s Comics and Stories, and many Captain Marvel Adventures and Marvel Family comics from the 1950?s. Update September 2024: All but a few of the Fawcett Comics have been listed and sold. There are still over 200 Disney comics to list. About Me: I used to be an avid comic collector. I always had a copy of the Overstreet guide and was always on the lookout for comics on my wish list. I even worked in a comic book store for about a year when I was in college. That was a long time ago. I never lost the love of comics, but the space to store a big collection became problematic and I sold my very large collection in the late 1980?s. I just never started collecting again. About This Listing: Publisher, series, issue, and title: Dell Publishing Co., WALT DISNEY'S COMICS AND STORIES, January 1943 Vol. 3, No. 4 (Issue # 28) First impression: Pen signature on cover, quite a lot of scuffing, staples tears but cover attached, spine roll, centerfold and one additional wrap detached at top staple, remarkably nice interior with off-white, supple pages. Degree of gloss: Moderate. Condition of cover: Big ink signature of original owner in the center of the cover (he would have been 10 when he wrote it). Lots of general scuffing that hurts eye appeal but none that stands out. Many fingerprints, detectable with flash and at an angle, but not too distracting straight on. Lots of small indentations that catch light but don't break color or have too much visual impact. Edges of the comic show some light wear but are generally pretty good for the overall condition. Corners: Right corners are blunted and have minor wear, left corners are blunted and scrunched and are both missing small pieces. Spine and staples: Staple placement is a little off, but there is quite a lot of spine roll, especially at the top. The staples are rusted with some migration and there is major staple wear. There staples are popped but the cover is still attached securely. The spine has a 1" split at the bottom. Original staples: Yes Interior staples: The top staple is detached from the inner two wraps. It looks like it wasn't driven deep enough to start with, so more of a bindery error than deterioration. The bottom staple is shiny, centered, and tight. Paper color and condition: Off white, darker at edges, but still off-white. Supple, perhaps slightly stiff, but in no way brittle. Smell: Slight smell of sweet pastries. Interior condition: Minimal reading wear. The last several pages have folded corners. If I had to give it a grade: 2.5 Good+ The interior is quite a virtue, but not enough to overcome the condition of the spine and the visual disruption of the cover. I am not a professional comic book grader, but I have done my best to describe and photograph the comic being offered in this listing. Thanks for looking and have a beautiful day.
