Description: The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham Published in 1953 by Penguin Books, a first edition thus, second printing of this classic. Rebound in modern 1/4 leather fine binding over red buckram. Four raised gilded spine bands with gilt lettering and bordering. All edges speckled. Marbled endpapers. Octavo, 7” x 4.25”, 238 pages plus 2 pages of ads. The Painted Veil is a 1925 novel by British author W. Somerset Maugham. The title is a reference to Percy Bysshe Shelley's 1824 sonnet, which begins "Lift not the painted veil which those who live / Call Life". The biographer Richard Cordell notes that the book was influenced by Maugham's study of science and his work as a houseman at St Thomas' Hospital. CONDITION: The book is in VERY GOOD+ vintage condition. Square spine with firm hinges and joints and tight pages. Light rubbing to leather. A few spots of dust. Pages darkened with age.
