Description: This is a Pre 1950s Handlan St. Louis USA No. 57 Red Ribbed Globe Lantern. 8” to top of Lantern. 13.5” to top of Bail Handle. 6.5” base diameter. Has some chipped/missing paint. Small 1/8” hole on side of base should be able to be patched up/repaired. Needs a wick. The Red Ribbed glass globe is in excellent shape with only tiny flea bites on inside edges of rim. Most people think the red Handlan kerosene lamp is a railroad lamp. In actuality, these lamps were manufactured for utility companies by the Handlan Company in St. Louis,MO. They were specifically made for utilities throughout the US for marking excavations at night. They were the early 20 th century predecessors the round black “smudge pots” of the 50’s and 60’s, and the flashing yellow lights of today. This lantern is stamped on the top with company name. The glass is stamped “Handlan No 57”. Please see photos for condition
