Description: Vintage Dartmouth College sterling silver pin depicting iconography of the famous college weathervane. This pin appears to have been custom fabricated in Taxco Mexico (known for their silver production) for someone affiliated with Dartmouth. Date is unknown but probably 1940s, maybe earlier! The history of the weathervane on Dartmouth College's Baker Library Tower includes its design, its removal, and the college's plans for a replacement. The copper weather vane on which this pine is based was designed in 1928 during the construction of Baker Library as part of a contest. It depicts Eleazar Wheelock, the founder of Dartmouth, sitting on a stump and speaking to a Native American man who is seated on the ground, wearing feathers, and smoking a pipe. A barrel of rum is thought to be depicted behind Wheelock. This iconic and rare work (the only one of its type known!) is made in heavy gauge sterling silver. Measures: 1 7/8” H x 2 7/8” W Weight: .46 oz General light wear and surface scratches consistent with gentle use and polishing over time. No breaks or repairs. An incredible piece of Dartmouth history!
