Description: Vintage 1940s Composition Nun Costume Doll in original full black and white religious habit / costume, Christian Veiling (head covering), crucifix, muslin pantaloons / undergarments and socks / black Mary Jane shoes. She is jointed at the neck, shoulders and hips. Her head can turn from side to side and her arms and legs are movable. She has painted on facial features including light brown eyebrows and eyelashes, blue eyes and red closed puckered mouth. There is some crazing noted to face due to age. Has all her fingers and toes. Legs show a bit of crazing. The black silky habit covers her almost entirely. Only her hands and face are exposed. The black and white veil drapes down her back. Her attire is stapled on so I did not remove. Her head covering is called a Christian Veiling. The veil symbolizes purity and modesty and that she has taken her vows of poverty and modesty. Novitiates wear a white veil and following their vows, they wear a black one. The cincture (rope) around her waist is typically tied into 3 knots that represent their vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. The meaning, types and colors of the knots and cincture can change depending on the nun's order.
