Description: Vrishvahana is one of the aspects of deity Shiva. Here Shiva is depicted as the ideal male in this Chola bronze. The statue is compelling in artistry and proportion. The distinctive Chola style emerged during the reign of Aditya Chola (870-906 AD) and is characterized by a sensuous beauty, geometrical perfection, powerful presence and an intricacy of design. This depiction of Vrishvahana shows the deity in an artful, lithe pose the moment before movement. The form is masculine but pure and peaceful in its gaze. I have no idea of the age of this piece, but likely 19th or 20th century. This form apparently emerged over 1000 years ago, and the Chola culture is renown for their bronze lost wax sculptures. Please contact me if any questions or observations. I can take more detailed photos if requested. I see no indications of artist, date, or provenance. We inherited it from my late in-laws, and have no idea from whom or where.
