If the lift pump fails or is unable to keep 10psi of fuel pressure then your pump is susceptible to damage, overheating and failure. Often if your VP44 failed the root cause is a bad or failing lift pump. The stock pump does not supply sufficient pressure for stock power. It is mounted to the engine block and has to push through some small fittings and lines that act as a restriction, even worse the pump has to pull fuel all the way from the tank and electric pumps are designed to PUSH not PULL fuel. The in tank pump recommended by Dodge dealers is not really any better it may flow a slightly higher volume but at pressures even lower than the stock pump. It is placed inside the fuel tank to keep it cool and reduce failures, but when it fails you are out another $500 for the dealer to drop your tank and replace the pump again. What are you options (in order of Best to Worst)? Airdog II 165gph ($670) Airdog 150gph or 100gph ($590/$565), FASS 95/150 ($566.10) and take advantage of a pump that has a lifetime warranty, improve mpg, 3 micron filtration (stock is 10 micron), water separation, removes entrapped bubbles in the fuel. Placed near the fuel tank and comes with new larger lines and fittings and will keep 15psi to well over 500HP. Get a Raptor 100gph ($385) or 150gph ($404) Lifetime warranty. Placed near the fuel tank and comes with new larger lines and fittings and will keep 15psi to well over 500HP. FASS DDRP (direct dodge replacement pump)with relocation kit ($300) flows 40% more fuel than stock. Placed near the fuel tank and comes with new larger lines and fittings. Good to about 350-400HP Stock pump with relocation kit ($210) Placed near the fuel tank and comes with new larger lines and fittings. Placed near the fuel tank and comes with new larger lines and fittings. Good to about 300-350HP FASS DDRP (direct dodge replacement pump) ($274.55) flows 40% more fuel than stock, placed in original location. Good to about 300-350HP Buy a stock replacement pump for $150 and pray that it does not die on you in 60k miles. Stock power only Keep your old lift pump and get a Fuel Pressure Gauge so you will know if you are low on fuel pressure or if your pump quits so you do not drive your vp44 without cooling and lubrication. Ideally you have a full set of gauges and are monitoring Fuel pressure, Exhaust Gas Temperatures (Pyrometer) and Boost psi. I can get you gauges with a triple pillar pod for $295. A fuel pressure gauge is recommended with any fuel pump and is good insurance ($150 with gauge pod). Install a low fuel pressure warning light kit for $50 so you will know if you are dangerously low on pressure (light comes on at 5-7psi and a weak pump may have already been causing damage.) Go to the dealer and pay $500 for a pump that is no better than stock and you have to find a dealership when it need replaced. Stock power only. Don't change your stock pump, don't monitor for low fuel pressure. Buy a new VP44 pump and void the warranty by running it with a bad lift pump. (not recommended). Disclaimer: Failure to replace feed pump along with the Injection Pump may result in non warranted damage. It is highly recommended that the feed pump be changed along with the injection pump. Using unapproved fuels such as WVO, SVO, Mineral oil, trans fluid, or waste oil may also void the warranty *Performance chip & add on disclaimerTampering with the pump's wires can cause premature pump failure. If the wires are cut the pump is no longer warrantable, and any repairs that need to be made to the injection pump will be the buyer's responsibility. In the VP44 pump the fuel is used to cool and lubricate the pump, and the tolerances between the head and the rotor is very fine. Performance chip add-ons affect the cooling rate of the pump. The pump will become hotter due to excessive RPMs from the chips programming. When the throttle is backed off the fuel to the pump is reduced, and the pump's cooling capabilities are greatly reduced. Since the pump is hotter from the increased RPMs the rotor siezes in the head and the pump fails. An alternative to cutting into the pump's wires is to use a chip that plugs directly into the trucks ECM. This approach will allow for an increase in HP while not excessively heating the fuel pump. A great example of this is the DiabloSport Power Puck. *Defective VP44 Engine CodesThe retrieval of codes does not constitute an engine diagnosis. However, there are some codes that usually indicate a defective injection pump. A current P1688 always means that the pump is bad, there is no further diagnosis required. Code P0216 is probably the most common code for VP-44 Pumps. If transfer pump pressure has been checked and is O.K., the injection pump is defective. Other codes that are less common are P0180, P0181, P0215, P0251, P0252, P0253, P0254, P0370, P1287, P1689 and P1690. These codes USUALLY, but not always indicate a defective pump. There are wiring and power checks to be performed if these codes are present. These codes relate to Dodge pickups only, and are not for any other ISB application. (For more Dodge or Non Dodge VP44 pumps see list at bottom of page.) Other VP44 pumps like the IPVR16X or 0470506029 are often used in Midrange diesel trucks like tow trucks, tractors etc. Part #'s are also: 0470506003, 0470506012, 0470506026, 0470506029, 0986444009, IPVR13X, IPVR16X, 3964555RX, 3944983RX, 3943506RX, 3937672RX, 3937167RX There are High performance VP44 that are designed to flow more fuel and give more horsepower for Dodge trucks. They usually advance timing and have larger ports and use the longer stroke of the HO pump with the larger diameter plunger of the SO pump to increase fueling capacity above 650HP These start at $1500 and go up to about $2500. For most people seeking more power larger injectors 100HP ($370 with exchange) and a performance box (120HP for about $490) are a more cost effective upgrade.
