Description: [SCIENCE - ILLUSTRATED BOOKS - FRENCH LITERATURE 18th century] We sell hereOne of the most beautiful illustrated scientific books of the 18th century!VOLTAIRE1694-1778 Original editionText in French Elements of Neuton's philosophy (Newton), Made available to everyone Amsterdam, Jacques Desbordes, 1738Title printed in red and black with finely engraved portraits of Voltaire and Newton and, 27 engraved vignettes, 6 engraved plates, 58 engravings in the text, 22 engraved culs-de-lampe and 1 engraved folding table. The first edition of Elémens appeared in two versions, one with the mark of Étienne Ledet and the other with that of Jacques Desbordes. Some minor variations between the two versions published almost simultaneously (the best known is the motto of the title vignette of the Desbordes printing “Serere ne dubites” instead of “Hope guides me» in that of Ledet)Both versions contain only twenty-five chapters, because Voltaire did not provide either publisher with a complete manuscript. A twenty-sixth chapter on fluxions has been added to a "new edition" published in Paris the same year.L'Elegant printing, and the great finesse of the numerous engravings illustrating the text, especially the numerous vignettes engraved by Folkema, B. Picart, van Schley, Dunbourg and others - make it one of the most attractive of all scientific books. Voltaire lived in exile in England from 1725 to 1728 where he became an ardent admirer of Newtonian physics and philosophy, which he introduced to France with this book, a France where dominant again the thought of Descartes and Malebranche. He may have met Newton although this is uncertain. We know that he attended the funeral by Newton in 1727. Voltaire presents Newton as the discoverer of the true system of the world, as the incarnation of the victory of the Enlightenment over Christian theories and as the destroyer of the errors of Cartesianism. The text is preceded by both a poem and a dedication to Voltaire's mistress, the brilliant Marquise du Ch.[atelet], who also studied Newton and gave the first French translation of the Principia (which would not appear until in 1759).Period bindingFull brown leather, 5-raised back decorated with golden fleurons, Havana morocco title piece, gold titling, marbled edges Solid binding very correctly preserved, various defects usual for old works, small cracks on hinges, brands, usual wear or friction various on back, caps, flats, edges, small various leather shortages, headdresses, corners, edges, slight corners. bald, body of work holding together perfectlysee visuals...Beautiful copy, printed on fairly thick laid paper, clean and fresh internally overall, almost without foxing, dirt or light spots on the inside Beautiful interior condition, beautiful quality paper Very Rare and desirable copy of cThis famous and important edition!!
