Description: Like new! The singing and playing on this disc (and the whole 10CD series for that matter) is wholly artful and fine. The writing is an excellent example of Vivaldi's individualism - his unmistakeable style. I am inclined to argue that of all the baroque composers, he is the most recognizable. Even Bach explored other composers and I think Bach was the more universal of the two stylistically. Other major Baroque composers have their "cousins" if you will - those with whom they share commonalities. For example, Corelli's tight counterpoint and texbook instrumentation finds similarity with Handel. Vivaldi on the other hand had his copyists and many were inspired by his fluency and active figures but who before him was even remotely "Vivaldian?" All of Vivaldi's wonderful creativity is on display here. His fine sense of line, total mastery of harmony and tight voice leading will keep the connoisseurs fully occupied. They will also be beguiled by the beauty of Vivaldi's music and those who listen to music without a large theoretical background will be pleased even if they don't know exactly why or how the music works on them. (thank you Wolfgang, you get credit for that thought). The engineers did superlative work on this recording and all in all, this is a gorgeous disc and I can't recommend it more highly...frankly it shouldn't be missed and belongs in every CD collection that includes Baroque Vocal Music. - David J.
