Description: This scale model of Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann' famous "Cabaret Fledermaus" Chair, designed in 1905 is a remarkable design collectable in its own right. Hoffman (1870–1956) was a central figure in the evolution of modern design, and a leader in an aesthetic movement born in Europe in the late 19th century that rejected florid, extravagant ornamentation in favor of a new emphasis on simplicity of line. The Cabaret Fledermaus, also referred to as the Cabaret “Bat” chair features horseshoe-shaped runners that are typical style elements of Hoffmann. His design also features highly decorative wooden spheres the size of golf balls that strengthen the joints. The original Cabaret Fledermaus was supplied in both white with black balls and vice versa for the public rooms of the Cabaret. Manufactured in a bent beech frame with molded laminated wood seat and turned beech elements in mahogany stain and shellac varnish. Produced by the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, ech chair miniature is painstakingly crafted in the original materials at a scale of 1:6 and is packed in its own wooden shipping crate with a descriptive brochure. The miniature offered here has spent all but a few hours over the past 20+ years stored in its original packing crate, surrounded by the original packing material. Manufacturers of the full-scale (1:1) chair since 1972 is Franz Wittmann, Austria. Introduced in Vitra's original Miniatures Collection in 1992, number 4 to be added to the Collection.
