Description: Vintage black and white photo showing Wright Aeronautical engineers working on what I believe is a Wright J-5 Whirlwind engine. The plane is the Bellanca Green Flash. The photo is 8 x10”, and printed on thick stock that feels like it is backed with linen. Because of the thicker paper, the photo is in excellent condition with no rips or creases. The photo has an embossed stamp in the lower left corner which reads “REID STUDIOS, 01 BROADWAY, PATERSON, NJ.” The photo is undated, but because of the embossed stamp, I assume it is original to the time period of the 1930’s. I tried to capture a shot of the photographer’s stamp in one of the photos. Reid Studio was started by John Reid and was run by his son after John died in 1911. The studio’s legacy and artifacts, including cameras and photographs, are now part of the collection at the Passaic County Historical Society. The Bellanca “Green Flash” was a modified version of the Bellanca J-300 Special monoplane, a long-range aircraft designed in the 1930s. The airplane gained fame for its attempts at setting long-distance flight records. It was known for its distinctive green paint scheme, hence the nickname “Green Flash.” The aircraft was based on the Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker design, which was widely respected for its durability and range. Bellanca aircraft, in general, were noted for their efficient wing design and robust construction, which made them ideal for long-distance flights during the era when many aviators were attempting record-breaking trips across oceans and continents.
