Description: Vintage Wooden Cigar Box ~ Empress of Tampa Diplomats Thompson&Co. Tampa. Cigars not included. Notched wooden box. - Earlier than the 1920’s. Most cigar companies made cardboard boxes after the depression Lid needs attached. Claw hooks need pushed in wood. Top has some paint. And was used for tacks or nails and is marked on sides. Box is in decent shape for its age. Guessing it was from the early 1900’s. Box held Fifty Fine Cigars - marked on lid Paper seal of the City of Tampa and Permit no TP-612 on the box. City was organized July 15, 1887 There was an ordinance said the cigars were more than 15cents and not more than 20 cents. So this is an old box! No cigar is 15cents today. Tampa History 1934 they obtained a postal permit and did mostly mail order cigars. Founded in 1915 in the keys. Moved to Tampa following a hurricane in 1934. Closed its Tampa factory of 112 employees in the 60’s and moved to Bethlehem, Pa. Ybor city was the area cigars were manufactured in Tampa. Rich in history.
