Description: For sale is a vintage copy of Wilson's Tales of the Borders and of Scotland: Historical, Tradionary, and Imaginative, revised by Alexander Leighton, one of the original editors and contributors. This item was published by William P. Nimmo, Edinburgh. No date appears on the title page or the reverse, but the preface is dated March, 1857. It is the stated "volume I" but the single book contains volumes 1 and 2, with pages numbered separately. Contents page is pictured for Volume 1, but there is no corresponding contents page for Volume 2. Volume 2 includes: The Wife or the Wuddy; Lord Durie and Christie's Will; Recollections of Burns; The Convivialists; Philips Grey; Donald Gorm; The Cured Ingrate; The Adopted Son; and the Fortunes of William Wighton. The illustration of John MacKay Wilson in the frontispiece is the only illustration. It is still protected by tissue and in very good condition, despite a little water damage to the lower part of the design. The book is 6.6 inches tall by 4.5 inches wide and almost 1.5 inches thick. It has 280 pages in "volume 1" and 284 in "volume 2". The book has a worn leather-reinforced spine. It is hardcover, with red boards. The spine has some fancy tooling and gilt in the leather, which is still impressive and page ends have a faux marbleized decoration, see images. The book is in very good condition for its age, which is probably just over 150 years old. The leather spine is worn, especially on the back, see images. There is evidence of water damage visible on the title page, in the slight puckering of the front cover, and in the puckering and discoloration of the back cover, see images. However, despite these blemishes, there is absolutely no whiff of mold or mildew. The only marks in the book are stray pencil marks on front endpaper, see image. These may be from a bookstore, with an old price of 8.50 (unknown if pound, shilling or dollars.) The binding is holding remarkably well. Please feel free to ask any additional questions.
