Description: Vintage Waterman Crusader Fountain Pen - Big 14k Gold Nib - Restored! Waterman was (and remains) one of the premiere makers of fountain pens. In the 1940's they created a "Taperite" series of pens to compete with the famous Parker 51. Along with the hooded nib pens, they offered pens with more standard "open" nibs like this one. I believe this particular one is a open-nib "Crusader" from the late 1940's or early 1950's.By the 1940's Waterman was considered kind of "old fashioned" in that they were still making pretty standard lever-fillers while other brands were experimenting with vacumatic systems, vacuum-fil, etc., but their nibs were always legendary. Features: - Fully restored! Cleaned inside and out and fitted with a fresh new ink sac. It is ready to write! Please let me know if you need filling instructions, I can send over more detailed instructions or a Youtube clip.- Big "#5a" size 14kt gold medium-fine nib! The nib is flexible but writes very dry with minimal pressure, it takes a little getting used to. Please note that "1940's flex" is different to "1920's flex" - this is not a wet noodle nib and it requires a little bit of pressure for the tines to open. I would not recommend pushing it more than in my writing sample. The "nice flex" text in my sample is what I would consider a "safe" amount of flex for this nib.- Classy dual-tone metal cap, plastic body.- Comfortable full-size pen, fits well in the hand both posted and unposted. Condition Notes: - Physical condition is great! I would say this pen is very nearly mint. The body is shiny and sleek with very minimal wear although there are some minor scuffs here and there. There is a small scratch on the section (see pictures). The imprint is very crisp.- Cap is in good condition as well. There is a minor spot of wear on the back of the cap towards the top and a few smaller scratches. This dual tone finish is very prone to wear so it's uncommon to find one in such good condition in my experience. - Nib takes a little getting used to as the tines are a little tight but this also makes the nib great for calligraphic writing as it can give you the thin hairlines needed for proper copperplate calligraphy. I'd recommend this pen for someone who may already have some experience with semi-flex and flex nibs. - Feed has some weird little nibbles on the underside of it, doesn't affect function. Overall, this is a great example of these late 1940's Waterman pens, and in my experience the open-nib varieties are a little more uncommon than the hooded nib varieties. It's a good choice for someone who wants to try out Waterman's signature "flex" as these were some of the last flex nibs they made. Please take a look at the pictures for a better a idea of the pen's condition. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or need any additional pictures.
