During the postwar era, Soviet engineers designed the Amfibia to be able to meet the demands of deep sea pressure without the manufacturing precision of their western competitors. The watch was intended to withstand the inescapable production defects in Soviet factories by using the water’s own pressure to seal the watch components tighter and tighter as pressure increases. The unique design of the crown releases into two pieces when it is unscrewed but screws down to create a precise seal underwater. And the acrylic crystal may not be as scratch resistant as some other materials, but it is also impeccably easy to remove scratches with an application of poly watch. In short, the Amfibia is a watch whose design reflects the idiosyncratic requirements of Soviet manufacturing without compromising performance. The seller from whom I purchased the watch about a year ago said it was serviced prior to that sale, though all I can say for sure is that I have seen no accuracy concerns as long as I’ve had it. This is a mechanical watch which requires hand winding, with a power reserve somewhere in the range of 36 hours. This model was probably produced during the 1980’s for the export market, as shown by the dial text in English and the brand labeling. “Bostok” is how domestic models were labeled, using the Cyrillic “b”, pronounced like an English “v”. The export models were intended for communist bloc countries like Poland, which pronounces the “w” like the English “v”. Hence the label on this watch, “Wostok”.
