Vintage Retro Ostby & Barton 10K Gold URANIUM GREEN Spinel Ring

This pretty vintage gold ring is by Ostby & Barton. In 1879 Engelhart Ostby formed a partnership with Nathan Barton. The firm became the world's largest producer of gold rings. In 1912 he decided to return from one of his many European trips on the Titanic, carrying with him his old doctor's bag he always used when travelling, filled with gems, precious stones, and other valuables that he had bought in Paris. Unfortunately, he never made it back, as he went down with the Titanic. The business continued into the 1950s. This c 1940 ring features an emerald-cut green spinel set into a yellow gold setting. The color of the stone is a light yellowish green. The highly-reflective synthetic stone glows under UV or black light, as uranium or vaseline glass would. But this genuine gemstone is spinel, and although it was man-made in the lab, it phosphoresces like any natural phosphorescent mineral. The minimalist prongs hold the ring but allow you to see the entire stone. The shoulders of the shank are simply incised along the top and bottom edges. The ring is stamped "OB 10K."Size 6 3/4 Condition: Excellent! Never sized. Very bottom edge of stamp is incomplete for some letters/numbers.
