Description: ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION! Have you ever seen a more stunning Raku vase? The answer is "No Never, Ever, Ever"! This wonderful VINTAGE RICK FORIS CONTEMPORARY LARGE RAKU CERAMIC VASE & PEDESTAL SIGNED size 20”x17”has impeccable styling and superb craftsmanship. Rick Foris has been making pottery since 1970. For the past 30 years he has worked almost exclusively with raku, a method of firing pottery in which the piece is placed in a heated kiln, removed when red hot and put into a container filled with a combustible material, such as sawdust. All of Rick’s work is done solely by him. His pieces are wheel thrown and contain many hand built additions and bases. All are raku fired. Many are finished with acrylics. "Rick Foris makes fantastic and eccentric sculptural pieces. Many are constructed using complicated assemblages of disparate components. Separately, the elements seem familiar: bases, handles, lids and spouts which betray his origins as a functional potter. Some draw on architectural resonances from Aztec and Mayan culture, and shapes reminiscent of Oriental tea vessels, ceremonial temple ware, gold Russian minarets and even bits from an engineer’s scrap-yard. The sum of each sculpture, however, is much more that its parts and ultimately the pieces defy attempts to impose a provenance. Instead they offer themselves as stunning individual objects with more that a touch of Hollywood about them.” (Tim Andrews, in his book Rake, A&C Black, London, 2004)This previously wondered rake ceramic vase is in excellent condition with no damage or unusual aging wear. Minor chips on base pedestal (see all photos).
