German phrases with English translations: G: Auf’s wohl mit gefullrem pokale E: Here’s to well-being with a fuller cup G: Ob Rittersmann, ob Lanzenknecht, ein jeder gern sein Schoppen stecht. E: Whether knight or soldier, each gladly downs his portion of beer. A Lanzenknecht (or Landsknecht) was a feudal serf used for military purposes by his master. These soldiers were often traded between landowners and were, in a sense, the equivalent of modern mercenaries, with the important difference that they were not free to choose their employer.
