Description: Super rare & authentic Navajo Arts & Crafts Guild Bolo Tie made from Turquoise and Sterling Silver. Handcrafted in the late 1940's to early 1950's this bolo is in wonderful vintage condition with original leather cord and sterling silver tips (aiguillettes) The slide measures 2" inches tall by 1.5" inches wide and hangs on its original 36" black braided leather cord. Great overall patina! The bolo bears the hallmark of the guild on the back which was founded in 1940 on the Navajo Nation and set the highest standards for authenticity, materials and workmanship. Individual silversmiths were not allowed to sign Navajo Guild pieces, they could only be marked with the official “Horned Sun” hallmark of the NACG and, often, the word "NAVAJO" The works of the Guild are characterized by a high-level of quality, the use of classic Navajo silversmithing techniques and materials, with clean, elegant, often modern lines, and restrained in its use of stamp, chisel and file work. A little more background on the history and purpose of the Navajo Guild... It's mission was to help young Navajo silversmiths learn from the masters and thus maintain the quality & design of classic Navajo silver work for generations to come The Guild's standards were exacting and their instructors were among the most accomplished Navajo jewelers of the era, including the Guild’s first Director, the brilliant Navajo silversmith and jewelry teacher, Ambrose Roanhorse.
