Description: This is a seldomly seen and expressive Vintage Mid Century Cubist Modern Mother Child Dog Lithograph Etching on Paper, by Mid Century Los Angeles Modernist and accomplished Pacific Northwest textile designer and muralist, Steven Oshatz (b. 1940.) This artwork depicts a young boy holding hands with his mother, as they walk along a darkened path at night. Tall trees, and various other scenery is visible. The mother and boy's back are turned to the viewer. The boy holds a small sack, and the mother carries an infant of her right shoulder, which stares quizzically in the viewer's direction. At the woman's heel is a small dog who is trailing her. Signed and dated: "Oshatz '59" at the lower right edge. Approximately 14 3/4 x 18 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual visible artwork is approximately 9 1/2 x 10 5/8 inches. Very good condition for age, with some slight yellowing to the matting, and light yellowing at the edges of the visible print. Additionally, there is moderate scuffing, paint loss and edge wear to the original vintage period wood frame (please see photos.) Acquired from an old collection in Los Angeles, California. Original artworks by Steven Oshatz very rarely appear on the secondary market. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. He grew up in Los Angeles around the vibrant artists' community of the 1950s and 1960s studying under artists at the New School of Fine Art before attending Otis Art Institute and Chouinard Art Institute (now California Institute of the Arts). He exhibited in Los Angeles galleries before moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1968. In the years following he developed a deep attachment to the visual environment of the Northwest and to the theatrical and artistic community that was emerging at that time. This led to rich collaborations that integrated his visual creations with the world of the performing arts in the form of stage sets and multimedia works.Oshatz’ visual works utilize the qualities of light, color and kinetic energy to create resonance in the eye of the viewer. Over the course of his career these same qualities have infused his public pieces, such as stage designs and murals, as well as sculpture, assemblages, photography, watercolors and drawings, printmaking, and works on canvas and silk.Since the 1980s his custom designs for silk accessories have been represented throughout the United States through his silk design and printing studio, Tancho Images. His silk design work has allowed him to fuse the applied arts with his expertise in the elements of line, form, and vibrant color that are an integral part of his fine art.Through his paintings and photography he continues to explore and expand his vocabulary of form and color, seeking an ever-deepening communication of his experience of time, space, and energy.
