The history of the publishing house begins in the eighteenth century, when Francesco Cesare Vallardi (1736-1799) began the production of printed books in Contrada Santa Margherita and made it one of the main centers of Milanese cultural life. His sons Pietro (1770-1819) and Giuseppe (1784-1861), entitled the company Fratelli Vallardi (1812) and distinguished themselves in the publishing panorama for the publication of books and art prints. Pietro's sons, namely Francesco (1809-1895) and Antonio (1813-1876), respectively founded the Casa Editrice dott. Francesco Vallardi (1840) and “Antonio Vallardi Editore” (1843); the latter by publishing educational, scholastic and cartographic works. The descendants continued their respective activities, until in 1970 the "Antonio Vallardi" publishing house was sold to Garzanti , while in 1980 the "Francesco Vallardi" brand was purchased by Piccin-Nuova Libraria. In the 1990s the company followed Garzanti and became part of the Mauri Spagnol publishing group
