Description: This is an Vintage Indian Rosewood Hand Carved Adjustable Folding Book Shelf / Holder.At the time of the original listing, this was one of three listings being added for hand carved vintage Indian Rosewood pieces: an adjustable folding book shelf / holder, a box, and a desk caddy. I was familiar with this type of wood and the designation of Indian Rosewood. The book shelf has carver's information on the bottom designating the wood as "Himalayan Jungle Sheeshan". I did some research on long and learned that Indian Rosewood is, in fact, a common name for by Sheesham and Dalbergia sissoo wood. In that article Sheesham is used rather than Sheeshan as on the shelf. I assumed this was either a typo, or a wood that has varient spelling.The book shelf base, when closed, is 13" x 5" x 5/8" thick. The length when fully expanded is 20". The wood is beautifully and intricately carved and finished with the skill typical of fine Indian wood carvers. The designs are traditional Indian leaf, flower, and foliage motifs.The label on the back can be read in a closeup photo. You will see that it states that the carvers of these shelves produce three per day, all done by hand.We have a variety of other antique and vintage woodenware in our ebay store. Condition The shelf is in excellent condition. The way the tension from the hinges is applied, the side panels will not stand upright on their own.
