Description: The carving covers 33 inches of the 45 inch long stick. The work is easily museum quality with a sticker attached with Hungarian words, a reference for a competition entry. The carving illustrates the 19th century Hungarian highway man or scamp(betyar). A snake is curling up toward the top of the stick with a large frog in his mouth and the highway man is forcing the frog away from the snake with a small tomahawk like ax. The work is richly detailed with flowers and leaves commonly used in Hungarian folklore. The stick is carved from dogwood (Cornus mas or cornel tree), an extremely dense wood and unlike the wood of most other woody plant species, sinks in water. The ancient Greeks considered this wood superior for the construction of spears, javelins and bows. This item shows no cracks or any substantial damage. The cane is dated to the City of Pomaz, Hungary, 1989. The artist left only the initials of his name there: “F.J.”. I purchased this item in 1991 from the artist for $350. Adjusted for inflation that would be over $700 today.
